BBQ Part 2
Wah..kel..so sentimental... haha
But I can't deny that it was a nice warm feeling to receive such a reception from the amazing race boys..and although we just met some of them (those that did not go for the amazing race) they were gentlemenly and pretty soon kel and me were seated with satay, chicken wings, otah and bee hoon in front of us..but like what kel mentioned..the hard part came when we had difficulty breaking the ice (no hee haa or whacko now)..kel was quiet and I was down to talk abt soccer only..until the moment when kok wei wanted us to tell ghost stories..
Abang Kel was really modest in his previous blog entry. The truth was that he shattered the ice with his comms101 ghost-storytelling skills, spinning army tekong tales of mortal danger and fear, of the dead and the undead, of blood and horror...of the spiritual and the non spiritual..With his nonchalant/sian/natural look, he had the boys captivated...some of them were subconsciously stuffing bee hoon to their mouths with their hands as their eyes were transfixed to the storyteller..his partner Abang Nasz was instrumental too..with his grave, serious face and emotionless eyes...together with the appropriate shakes of the head and nods of agreement....mon dieu...the tension was unbearable..Was it just an evening chill or was it something else? Those boys who were eager for the night walk at first suddenly felt a weariness in their legs...those who did not wanna go initially became fired up to go, only to falter upon knowing it was thurs night...the storytelling would have made Russell Lee proud (author of the famous Singapore Ghost Stories series, for the benefit of those who only read investment books).
Basically they were warmed up and friendlier to us then and it was nice moving around talking from individual to individual...Basket Kel..no wonder u and Haidar were laughing away...talking abt my antics...Anyway I talked to Dot, the most senior among them (and the one with the most body art), and he surprised me with his maturity and leadership. He understood Seng Meng's role and appreciated his difficulties. He also impressed me with his leadership style. Laid back and friendly, he would 'slot' his instructions amidst jokes and teasing, and the other students would respect and listen, all the while maintaining a relaxed and light hearted atmosphere. I really liked him and listening to him express his desire to help out Seng Meng as best as he can, I hope he continues to be a good influence for the rest...
Oh and I talked to Feruz too...and the first he asked was about the rest of timeline..it was quite touching when he was all concerned hearing that Grace was sick (he remembered she was sick too during the sat soccer) and that chew yan was all flustered and stressed when he heard about the last min assignment. He mentioned that he missed Prof Menkhoff too..haha...he clearly likes the prof alot... =)
Overall it was like what Kel said, the place itself brings about a nice serenity to it..with the open sea..wide greenery, spacious rooms and plenty of space...it was hard not to feel relaxed. The aroma of the bbq food, the great interaction and companionship with the students all brought about an unexpected respite from school, work and exams...we really wish we could have gone thru the whole camp with the students...and again its the same deep, heartwarming feeling that surrounds us whenever we part company with them...its just amazing to be able to interact with such nice people from a different environment, no matter how short it was, and come away knowing you've learnt and experienced something good.. just like our rapport building, AR and presentation...
Anyway I think Kel would want to keep this under wraps but what the fish I'll just say. He actually was reluctant to go at first, cos it was his dad's birthday. But he changed his mind cos he felt that he made the commitment to the students days back and did not want to let them down, plus he did not wan to leave poor Nas alone...so he was all over Bukit Panjang getting the cake done and all for the family to celebrate with the dad, before leaving the house for the bbq. But the best part was that the whole family and the birthday daddy appreciated his commitment and patiently decided to delay the cake cutting just to wait for him to return from the bbq. I don't know why I said all this, but I guess I'm touched by the sweetness and understanding showed by both his family and himself. Its pretty cool bro. =P
