noob blogger (nasir)

Hello....this is officially the first time i'm blogging...

Anyway this blog is meant for the leadership and teambuilding module for the SMU freshies, specifically for the group TIMELINE.. Hopefully this blog will expand to include the progress of the group as well as personal feedbacks from the members and comments from others...

Its 12.50am and i don't think i want to continue writing, but something struck me just now during a talk I attended dat might be worth mentioning..

I attended a talk for volunteers just now at the NVPC ( its the same talk the freshies had during matriculation which I did not attend and so I had to go for this one) about doing community service. The talk was fine and the speakers were passionate and motivated, but towards the end the facilitator said something which irked me. He said something like "I'm glad to see so many young faces, students interested in community service. I know SMU students need to fulfill 80hrs, you guys can go collect ur acknowledgement slips outside at reception..". Sigh it was painful to hear the audience snigger and laugh abt the compulsory 80hrs part, but the truth is that making it compulsory just reduces the sincerity of it.

I felt slightly hurt mainly because I realized that SMU has a very strong community service culture and that many many students here are willing to do community service sincerely without giving a damn abt the hours. Its just sad that the compulsory hours thingy gives a bad perception about us.

My point is that I'm glad to know that my LTB group members seem to exude sincerity and passion for this LTB project, and not doing it for the A+ only( although dats wat we expect from Prof ). Maybe I haven't really seen their true selves yet, but from what I've seen and heard during discussions they're all really enthusiastic and keen on making a difference. People say that LTB is the heaviest module this term because of the CSP, but I think the reason that its a heavy module is that students make it heavy- simply because we're committed and sincere about making it happen successfully. And i see this in other groups too. Heard that Gilles' group ( the grp with the most international students) were talking abt doing community service overseas- Pakistan, China, France even....

Hopefully this enthusiasm and commitment lasts all the way.... well enuff for an early morning write up...
